1. Who We Are

Our website address is: https://jamestantonmath.com. This site provides mathematics education resources, books, courses, and consulting services managed by Dr. James Tanton.

2. Information We Collect and Why We Collect It

Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site, we collect the data shown in the comments form, as well as the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to assist with automated spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Cookies and Analytics

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you visit our login page, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

We may use standard third-party analytics tools (such as Google Analytics) to monitor traffic patterns, optimization metrics, and curriculum resource interactions to improve our services.

3. Embedded Content From Other Websites

Articles and pages on this site may include embedded content (e.g., educational videos from YouTube, mathematical playgrounds like Mathigon, or forms relating to the Global Math Project). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website directly.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

4. Data Sharing and Retention

If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email. Visitor comments may be verified through an automated spam detection service.

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained until you request its erasure. This allows us to recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue. For users that register on our website (if any), we store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). Website administrators can also view and edit that information.

5. Notice to California Residents (CCPA & CPRA Compliance)

This section provides additional disclosures required under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA).

Categories of Personal Information Collected

In the preceding 12 months, this website may have collected the following categories of information for administrative, optimization, and community engagement purposes:

  • Identifiers: Name, alias, email address, unique personal identifiers, and internet protocol (IP) address.
  • Internet or Network Activity: Browsing history, search history, and interactions with our educational content, resources, or embedded media.

Your California Privacy Rights

If you reside in California, you hold specific legal protections regarding your data:

  • Right to Know & Access: You have the right to request access to the specific pieces of personal data collected about you over the past 12 months.
  • Right to Delete: You have the right to request the deletion of your personal data, subject to strict regulatory exceptions (such as data required for security, legal obligations, or completing transactions).
  • Right to Correct: You have the right to request that we correct inaccurate personal data maintained in your user profile.
  • Right to Opt-Out of Selling or Sharing: We do not sell your personal data for monetary gain. However, like most web applications, we use analytics and tracking pixels. You have the right to opt-out of this digital “sharing” at any time.

Do Not Track (DNT) and Global Privacy Control (GPC) Disclosure

California law requires us to state how we respond to automated browser preference selections. This website honors Global Privacy Control (GPC) signals. If your browser transmits a valid GPC or automated opt-out signal while accessing our site, our backend systems will interpret this choice as a request to block non-essential tracking and analytics tools on your device.

How to Exercise Your Privacy Rights

To submit a verifiable consumer request to view, correct, or remove your data, please contact us through our primary web contact channel or email us directly. We will confirm receipt within 10 days and provide a substantive resolution within 45 days of verification.
